The Curse of Curly Hair

I’m pretty positive I would work out twice as much if I didn’t have curly hair. I don’t even want to think about how long I’ve spent blow-drying and straightening my hair all of these years.

This is my hair on a good hair day (and at least an hour with a hair straightener)-

And here’s what it looks like when I wake up-

Yeah, it’s a real pain in the ass. I wake up early every day for work or school, debate working out before, and then realize that my hour long workout will cost me another hour and a half by the time I shower and do my hair. My alarm went off at 6 this morning under the assumption I was going to go for a run. I ran one hand over my hair, realized my  hair was still relatively straight from yesterday, called off the run to avoid washing my hair, and went back to sleep for an hour.

I’ve experimented with dry shampoos in the past, but I get SWEATY when I run. Like, sweat dripping off my ponytail sweaty. No amount of dry shampoo in the world can make my hair look decent after a run. Also, when my hair gets wet it reverts back to bushy curls, and then I have to straighten my hair all over again.

I’m planning on going for a run tonight and going to cycling tomorrow morning to avoid straightening my hair. The things girls do…

How long does it take you to do your hair?

I seriously have the same exact issues! I would say that this is 70% of the reason I don’t end up working out most of the time. No one understands unless they have curly hair too :)

  2. Melie says:

Why don’t you let your hair in its natural curly state? I love curly hair. I actually used to have it. For reasons nobody really knows though, my hair kind of straightened itself a couple of years ago. So, now, it is a weird not really straight not really curly situation. And because I am totally inept at styling my hair and because I spend approximately 30 seconds to do my hair, I walk around like a disheveled mop. Not really proud of it…

I have curly hair too. I normally just leave it curly. I put stuff in it to get rid of the frizz though. I’m way too lazy to straighten it in the morning. When I do, which isn’t that often, it takes like 45 minutes but my hair is shorter than yours is.

  4. Sarah says:

Naturally I have crazy curly hair too! Sometimes I do wear it curly but other times I straighten it and it takes about 20 minutes (including the blow dry). I use a babybliss straightener and would suggest it to anyone. It’s kind of pricey but I’ve had for the last 4 years and it’s been amazing!

  5. I have super fine hair – it’s thick, straight, fine which translates to flat. I keep it really short now so it takes me maybe 10-15 mins tops

  6. I am the exact same way with my hair! If I don’t straighten my hair I have a legit afro! That’s definitely one of the reasons I never work out in the morning.

  7. I have the curly hair curse. Some days I completely content with it and other days I try to fight it with the straightener. It is totally fine in the winter but in the summer I end up looking like a complete frizz ball. Not good.

  8. haha i feel ya, doing my hair is so annoying! however, since my hair is pretty thin it doesnt take me that long to straighten it..only like 15 minutes but if I want my hair to look really good I have to blow dry and then straighten it

  9. Hannah says:

Aw, that stinks that your hair is so hard to manage. I don’t think I would be able to handle it, I’m so lazy with doing my hair. After runs, I always shower just because I feel gross if I don’t. Sure, there’s dry shampoo but I know. I sweat a lot too.
My hair is pretty straight, so usually it takes a little bit of brushing and I’m good to go. I am in desperate need of a haircut though. Drying it takes forever.

  10. Hannah says:

Okay, so I know this is somewhat obvious, but, um… don’t straighten your hair?! Sure, it looks lovely straight, but I bet you’d look wonderful with natural curls too! Come join us natural curlsters! It’s fun over here, I promise! ;)

  11. Danielle says:

I have naturally wavy hair, so while I can let it go free without it being too bad, it’s just too fluffy/frizzy for my tastes. I used to straighten it every day in high school, but once I got to college I got lazy and started doing ponytails, buns, and pig tails on a regular basis. When I do take the time to straighten it, I can usually get it looking decent in 15-20 minutes, but for it to be really nice takes 30+.

  12. I say embrace the curls!! In my eyes bigger is better when it comes to hair! :) That or buns and ponytails are always a winner! ;)

  13. Ugh. One of the downsides of being a girl = doing hair. I hate doing it, with a passion. Usually I just brush, add some mouse, and go. I leave the house with my hair looking like a wet mop, but hey it’s all good. I’m a Kinesiology major so I can get away with it on my side of campus. It’s defiantly a step up to the sweaty hair that my friends rock. But working out literally turns my hair into a fro as well. It’s all good, but it takes forever to brush out, and no amount of conditioner seems to tame the beast. Haha.

  14. I do not have curly hair, but I have a need to wash my hair every day to make it look okay. I also have constant prickling if I don’t. And it takes half an hour, every day. But on the other hand, I’ll feel icky for 24 hours, so there.

  15. If I don’t wash my hair, I mean.

  16. Sarah says:

uhh I had no idea you had curly hair … I dont think.. I WANT A REAL PIC of your curly hair!

  17. Lauren says:

I am definitely the same way. Especially when I was younger, I always had huge, crazy, curly, wavy, and frizzy hair. I got it chemically straightened twice and now it’s starting to become slightly less curly but it’s never how I want it to look so I always end up getting out the straightener anyways. Or I just get lazy and throw it up in a ponytail! But I wish I could just be one of those people who could have their hair look perfect when it air dries. That would be so nice!

  18. Kat says:

My hair is naturally straight but it kinks easily. So post run, I have to pull it out of the ponytail and brush it ASAP or all is lost.

  19. kyleen says:

I laughed out loud when I say the second picture. I’m sure your hair doesn’t actually look like that! I say, if you have curly hair, embrace it and let it go. I have awkward waist lengthin between straight and wavy hair which I can’t be bothered to straighten or curl, so I just let it do it’s thing.

If you really want straight hair, how a bout a straight perm? Then you wouldn’t have to spend time every day straightening it.

  20. Errign says:

To be honest here’s my routine: wash hair, wrap up in a towel, scrunch some Garnier leavein conditioner in it, comb it. Done.

  21. I don’t have this problem. Mine is too straight! Kinda wish I had a little curls though

  22. I like the look of curly hair – my housemate perms her’s to get it curly!
I’m blessed(?!) with wavy hair that’s neither curly or straight and I get really annoyed with it sometimes. I know what you mean about getting sweaty – I’m the same. I don’t know how people can run at lunchtime and then go straight back to work without washing their hair.

  23. Meg says:

Curly hair isn’t a curse :( I know most people who straighten their hair say that it’s not a good kind of curl, but I think it’s worth a little time and effort to find something that would make your curls work for you, like talking to a stylist and trying different gels or mousses or other products.
I straighten my hair maybe once every six months and I always like the result, but when I think about doing it again, I have to move my workouts around so I have at least 48 solid hours of not working out because I totally get that it would ruin it and be such wasted effort.
Heck, even when I do my hair curly (and it takes all of 3 minutes, seriously, curly hair is awesome), if it looks “good” that day, I sometimes want to skip a workout to keep it that way!

  24. You are seriously hilarious!! I love the “this is what I look like when I wake up” pic.

My hair is getting long and it seems I am convincing myself on an almost daily basis NOT to cut it all off…I did this morning in fact…It’s so much easier short…

I have ugly wavy hair. It’s flat and gross.

So i wear my hear in buns lots.

  25. PS I tagged you in my daily 11 question post!
