Puff Pastry and No Desserts

My family doesn’t just hoard pasta- apparently we hoard puff pastry and sliced almonds.

SO many almonds, all half full.

And seriously, where did all this puff pastry come from? Or more importantly, what to do with it?

The only thing I could think to do with these two ingredients was to add Nutella. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any (the horror!) so I made a sweet, buttery filling instead.

Puff Pastry with Almonds

Ingredients:

One package puff pastry, thawed
1 cup sliced almonds
2/3 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

Directions:

Combine butter, sugar, and cinnamon in a saucepan over medium heat and stir until dissolved.

Cut the pastry into five or six rectangles. Spread each rectangle with butter mixture and sprinkle with almonds. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

I also made whipped cream out of heavy cream that was about to expire. I never really measure it, I just combine the cream with sugar and vanilla and whip. I did it by hand and it was way better than beating egg whites by hand!

How were they? I don’t know, I didn’t try them. I unintentionally started a no dessert streak and I want to keep it going for as long as possible (or until I buy a jar of Nutella.) My family liked them, though!

Do you or your family hoard food?

  1. puff pastry – what a random thing to hoard! You should check out Averie’s blog (Love Veggies and Yoga), she recently posted a recipe for a savory puff pastry dish, looked so good :-)
My mom hoards grains. shes buys a big bag for one recipe, then forgets about it for months. It’s only when I’m there to cook them do they get used up!

I don’t call storing food hoarding. I call it planning for a future emergency. If the floods come, I’ll have plenty of food. :)

I have lots of puff pastry in the freezer. Good (read that expensive really fat pastry) puff pastry and ordinary grocery store kind.

    Here’s one for you.

Take a sheet of pastry and cut it in 4 pieces. Cut up a Mars bar into pieces and put a few in the center of the square. Top it with a few toasted pistachios. Take the 4 corners and pull them together, sealing the edges. At the top, seal it like a pouch and then fold the corners over and they’ll look like little leaves. Brush with egg wash and bake til golden brown. Serve with whipped cream.

It takes NO time at all and your guests will think you slaved forever. Don’t let on.

They should look rather like these. I should have photographed mine but we ate them.

  3. I’m really OCD about making sure I have multiples of everything on hand. Not sure that’s hoarding though. Sure comes in handy when I’m too lazy to get to the store ;-)

  4. I’m a big hoarder of food stuff especially grains and pulses as I know as long as I have them and veggies I can make a decent meal.

  5. That dessert looks delicious!
I definitely hoard nuts and seeds – to the point that I’m scared of looking in my cupboard because I’m not sure what I’ll find!

We had some hoarded puff pastry in our freezer too! It got thrown away when we moved though :( I wish I wish I had this recipe then!

  7. Look at you getting all creative and stuff!

I used to LOVE nutella…That reminds me, I must go purchase some Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut online!

PS I hoard CEREAL…It’s crazy! Jeff gets cravings for corn pops, reese’s puffs, rice crispies, etc etc and when that happens, we buy a box BEFORE finishing the others…I swear to god I have 13 different cereals in my pantry. Drive. Me. Bonkers.
