Make it Yourself Monday- Applesauce!

I had a really good Make it Yourself Monday post planned for this week! It will have to wait until next week due to technical complications :)

Admittedly, applesauce isn’t nearly as exciting as today’s intended post, but it’s still pretty cool to make it yourself, right?

Couldn’t have done it without Franny. She’s been getting quite the workout lately- expect a lot more recipes from her!

I know plain applesauce isn’t very exciting, but you can use it in so many different things!

Some of my favorite applesauce recipes-

Yes, I’ve used applesauce in curry! And it’s delicious, too :)

The best thing about this applesauce? I got a huge bag of organic bruised apples at the grocery store for a dollar! Some were a little too bruised, but I salvaged most of them. If you can get discounted apples, this will be the cheapest applesauce you will ever make!

Chunky Cinnamon Applesauce

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups apples, chopped
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup sweetener (I used stevia)
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Cover with lid and simmer until brown and soft.

Let cool for 5-10 minutes and process in food processor until it reaches your desired consistency.

I left it a tiny bit chunky- I love the chunks!

I have brown bananas and an abundance of applesauce- I foresee muffins in my future!

Do you ever use applesauce in baked goods? It makes a fantastic oil substitute!

I pretty much always use applesauce in baked goods and I looooove chunky Musselmans for snacks, but I hate that they put HFCS in it – every cinnamon applesauce has it pretty much.

Gorgeous! I would love to try making this in the fall once you can start buying the half peck bags for el cheapo at the grocery store. I’ve never made a baked good with applesauce (the whole oil thing doesn’t really kill me dead), but I’d be willing to try!

Yum! I love homemade applesauce…it’s the best!

Applesauce is so amazingly easy to make that I haven’t bought any for years. If you cook the apples without the sugar they’ll soften much quicker – then pop the sugar and spices in. (from years of experimenting)

I would like to drizzle some sunflower seed butter over a warm bowl of this and go to town! :)

I love your make it yourself monday posts! :) One time, I need apple sauce for a recipe and when I got mine out of the fridge (store bought) it was moldy! So I had to think quick. I added an apple and some water in the vitamix and it kinda turned out like apple sauce…kinda. :)

It looks nice! the only way I use applesauce is to make your breakfast cookie. Now that I learned how to make it, it’s my favorite breakfast :-) But I still don’t bake.

  9. Apple sauce goes in everything. My Dad has loads of apple trees in his garden and every autumn he makes a huge stash of stewed apple – I usually steal some :-)

  13. I’ve always wanted to make my own applesauce. It seems so easy and I love that I would be able to control the amount of sugar that goes into it too! I hate how some store-bought applesauce has TONS of sugar added to it. I am always very careful to by “No Sugar Added” or “Natural” applesauce. :-)

  14. Yup always, but I like it really smooth, not a fan of chunks of apple in my muffins. Not sure why though as I love apples?! Never would have thought to make it myself but it’s really expensive here so might be the way forward! :)

  15. That is my perfect applesauce right there! Chunky and chock full of cinnamon. So good in baked goods, though I always add some oil too. :) I love your make it monday posts. Keep em coming!

Mmm… I love homemade applesauce! We used to make it all the time when we lived in China. :)

  20. Emily says:

I *never* think about making applesauce and its so easy! I use it as a substitute in baked goods sometimes when I’m trying to not use 10 sticks of butter :) I definitely will try to make this in the fall when its apple picking season and I have an overabundance of apples.

  21. Kelly says:

love homemade applesauce! It always tastes 100X better than any of the jar stuff. Yum!

  22. Rebekah says:

Ooooh, thanks for sharing the applesauce recipe! It may not seem as exciting as what you had planned but I definitely appreciate it :) .

I use applesauce to replace butter in one of my brownie recipes and love it! My sister actually likes them better than the typical brownie you can make or buy because they are so moist but retain a rich flavour.

  23. I love making homemade applesauce and I completely agree that it makes some amazing baked goods! I love it chunky too in my oats!
